Got a resume of a GM candidate and it does looks awesome?
Look again! You might fall into be a trap.
What you are seeing on the papers is a list of companies the candidate worked for and only good things about the person. What you don’t know is his/her integrity and reputation of the person in the local market. Yes, you can call their previous company ask about their experience with the person. I can bet that you will most likely get good feed-back. Unless they were legally written off, they will tell you only good things about them to save their own face. In this culture, you just don’t say anything bad about a person who left their organization.
There has been companies going through 2-3 GMs within a few months of their start-up. What makes me sad is that good companies fall into this trap and go through a hard time taking their business in Korea off the ground or they have a great first few months and sink without knowing why.
Watch out! GMs with good looking resumes are hunting for new companies.
